Short reads about common tooth problems

Short articles on the things people ask us most. What a symptom usually means, what you can do at home, and when it's worth coming in. Nothing here replaces an examination.

Written with Dr. Nikhil and Dr. Resham Deshpande.

Being written now

Topics we're writing now. One a month, in this order, unless the clinic asks for something else.

  • Sensitivity or pain? How to tell the difference

A short, sharp twinge with cold is not the same as nerve pain. Why that matters.

    Coming
  • Brushing and cleaning between the teeth

The technique, the brush, and the bit most people skip.

    Coming
  • A child's first visit

When to bring them, what happens, and how to make it ordinary.

    Coming
  • What a CBCT scan is

A 3D picture of the teeth and jaw, and when a dentist asks for one.

    Coming
  • Fillings, crowns and when a tooth needs more

How much tooth is left decides a lot.

If something hurts now

Reading is for later. If a tooth is keeping you up, or there is swelling, talk to the doctor. A pre-consult by video or phone is often the quickest way to find out whether you need to come in, and what to do until then.

If you are in pain and cannot reach the clinic, or you have swelling that is spreading, a fever, or difficulty swallowing or breathing, go to a hospital emergency department straight away.

Ask the doctor about what you've read

A short video or phone call, so you know whether you need to come in, what's likely to happen, and what to bring.
